ABOUT DR Q

Dr. Qinisani Nhlakanipho Qwabe, fondly known as Dr. Q, is a dedicated researcher and advocate for sustainable agriculture and rural development. Holding a PhD in Sustainable Agriculture, his expertise spans agricultural extension, food systems, and ecological sustainability.

He is the Founder and Host of Beyond the Headlines with Dr. Q (BTH with Dr. Q), a platform dissecting key leadership, policy, and social impact issues. Additionally, he leads NextGen Leadership and Ethical Development Solutions (PTY) LTD, a consulting firm specializing in leadership development, ethical governance, and strategic capacity building.

Dr. Q’s research delves into indigenous food crops, underutilized plant species, and sustainable food systems. His contributions extend to international conferences and publications, reinforcing his role as a thought leader. He also co-chairs the Australia-Africa Universities Network (AAUN) Early Career Researchers and plays a key role in the Agroecology Knowledge Network, bridging research, policy, and community-driven impact.

Beyond academia, Dr. Q champions food security through campus food gardens, fostering self-sufficiency and addressing hunger. His mission is to build resilient, sustainable agricultural systems for future generations.

Integrating indigenous foods into national policies and strategies

This South African study integrates indigenous foods into national policies and strategies to enhance food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. It involves multiple stakeholders, including academia, government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), non-profit organizations (NPOs), and the private sector. Conducted across all nine provinces, the project promotes the production, value-adding, and commercialization of indigenous crops while preserving biodiversity. By aligning with national frameworks, it supports policy development, research, and stakeholder engagement. Ultimately, it aims to integrate indigenous foods into formal markets and national food security programs.

This book chapter explores the significance of indigenous plant-based foods in African food systems, highlighting their nutritional value, cultural importance, and role in sustainability. It examines how crops like amaranth, morogo, millet, and sorghum contribute to food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience. The chapter discusses threats such as dietary shifts, loss of traditional knowledge, and competition from introduced crops. It advocates for policy support, education, and market opportunities to promote these foods. Ultimately, it positions indigenous plant-based foods as vital for building resilient, nourishing food systems across Africa.
